Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bagels Unveil Store Concept, Coffee & Bagels

Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bros. Bagels today unveiled a new restaurant chain concept called Coffee & Bagels involving both brands that will serve, well… coffee and bagels.

The concept is launching with two stores in Colorado Springs, Colo. — one is just opened and the other is scheduled to open later this month — with plans to add some 20 locations throughout the remainder of 2015 and “additional locations to open in 2016 and beyond,” according to an announcement from Caribou today.

“We saw an opportunity to bring Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bros. Bagels, two beloved brands, together,” Mike Tattersfield, President and CEO Caribou Coffee said in the announcement. “A place where specialty coffee and fresh-baked bagels live together under one roof doesn’t exist at scale and we’re excited to bring this concept to guests across the country.”

The opportunity must have presented itself quite naturally, as both brands are properties of the Luxembourg-based JAB Holding Company, which since 2012 has held a majority stake in Caribou Coffee, and since December of last year has held a majority stake in Einstein’s parent company, the Einstein Noah Restaurant Group. In 2013, Caribou was part of a similar coffee/bagel brand mashup in partnership with Breugger’s Bagels, but that was prior to Jab’s Einstein Noah acquisition.

The menu for Coffee & Bagels is composed of slightly scaled-down versions of each respective brand’s menu placed side-by-side, with Caribou handling the drinks and Einstein handling the food.
