The Oakland, Calif.-based nonprofit Food Craft Institute is launching a five-session course called Coffee Roasting and Retail, designed to give new and aspiring coffee business owners insight into crafting both great coffee and successful businesses.

Sessions will be held onsite at numerous Oakland coffee production and retail spaces, and will be led by an impressive group of Bay Area coffee experts from companies including green coffee importers Sweet Maria’s and Royal Coffee, roaster/retailers Blue Bottle Coffee and Red Bay Coffee, and retailer Modern Coffee.

The course will run from Feb. 22 to March 11, and the $900 cost includes meals. The deadline to apply is Monday, Feb. 13, at 5 p.m. PST. Here’s more straight from FCI on what to expect:

Coffee Roasting and Retail lifts the lid on the aromas, sights and sounds of leading Bay Area coffee businesses. New and aspiring coffee business owners will learn hands-on techniques and practitioner skills as well as the personal stories of successful roasters, wholesalers, retailers and coffee shop owners.

Students will gain invaluable insights into the culture and business of coffee as we explore tools and methods for sourcing, roasting, cupping, selling and serving. We’ll also go behind the scenes to explore coffee business staffing, financing and fundraising, giving new business owners the knowledge to start or improve their coffee ventures.
