Progress Coffee, a popular coffee shop and roaster on the burgeoning east side of Austin, Texas, is planning to add two locations after the owners just five years ago thought about closing the business.
“The ambiance and community and people kept bringing so much love and vitality and art, but I wasn’t able to pay the bills,” owner Joshua Bingaman recently told the Austin Business Journal. Bingaman since hired consultants and refined operations by consolidating food ingredients, roasting and merchandising coffee in-house. In addition to the two new locations, more Progress cafes are expected to open in 2012.
“Everyone has this notion that the coffee business has such a huge profit margin, but after packaging and staff and rent, you are really walking a fine line,” Progress Operations Manager Troy Authement told the journal.
