Bridgewater, Mass.-based coffee roastery and co-op Equal Exchange has taken out a full-page at in the Burlington Free Press urging Waterbury, Vt.-based Green Mountain Coffee Roasters to discontinue its ties to Fair Trade USA.
Fair Trade USA has faced criticism in recent months since its decision to allow larger plantations to earn its fair trade certification, although the group has maintained that the move is merely intended to help more coffee farmers earn fair wages.
According to an Associated Press report, Equal Exchange, based in Bridgewater, Mass., said in the ad — which ran in last Sunday’s paper — that Fair Trade USA’s policy change threatens “to reverse decades of hard-won gains while potentially putting at risk the very survival of the farmer cooperatives.”
Green Mountain is the largest purchaser in the world of Fair Trade USA-certified beans.
