Iranian Morality Police Crack Down on Cafe Culture

Iranian “morality police” raided 87 cafes over the weekend, arresting women for what they described as un-Islamic behavior.

According to the Iranian Students News Agency, dozens of coffee shops in the country’s capital city Tehran were shut down after police accused women of flaunting dress codes and publicly smoking hookah.

Cafe culture has thrived in Iran in recent years among the country’s youth, although the ISNA report notes that many conservative Iranians see cafes as a threat to Islamic values and a reflection of cultural infiltration from the West.
