A New York barista has opened Everyman Espresso on West Broadway in SoHo. Occupying just 600 feet, the coffee shop is the second owned by Sam Penix, who boasts a distinctive coffee-related tattoo on his fist.
The Everyman Espresso in SoHo will always offer two espressos, pulled on a Strada. (Currently the selections are Espresso Rustico, a blend, and Haru Cooperative, a single origin from Ethiopia that Katie Carguilo, the winner of the 2012 United States Barista Championship, used when she competed for the world title in Vienna last month.) In the back, a long counter with a brew bar is equipped with Chemexes and AeroPresses where coffee is made to order (right now, a yellow Catuai from Finca el Puente in Honduras and a Pacamara from Finca Santa Elena in El Salvador). And this steamy time of year, the shop is also ice-brewing coffee from the Cinco de Junio cooperative in Nicaragua.
