Smuckers Takes First Baby Steps Toward Sustainability

folgers launches corporate coffee sustainabilitySmuckers, which annually gets some 40 percent of its revenue from coffee products, has announced a corporate plan to purchase 10 percent of its coffee from certified sources by 2016.

The company, which owns coffee brands including Folgers, Dunkin’ Donuts, Millstone and Cafe Bustelo, outlined further plans for some measure of sustainability-minded operations in its recently released Smuckers 2012 Corporate Responsibility Report. The report follows a shareholders proposal from earlier this year requesting quantitative goals for certified coffee purchases and and methods for evaluating climate change.

The report also outlines the company’s planned partnership with the R. Neumann Stiftung Foundation to help improve sustainability, agronomy and organizational efforts for small-scale suppliers, as well as a separate partnership with World Coffee Research to develop hybrid varieties.
