Barista competitor and former Intelligentsia buyer Charlie Habegger may be headed west to join the team at Handsome Coffee Roasters. Global Coffee Review broke the story early this morning, saying that Handsome, based in Los Angeles, announced that Habegger has been hired as director of coffee.
Here’s more from GCR:
Charlie has spent six years in the industry, training under Michael Phillips, Stephen Morrissey, Geoff Watts while holding multiple positions in the industry. Most recently, he was working as an educator and green coffee buyer at Intelligentsia’s headquarters in Chicago where he was responsible for training staff and sourcing green coffee. Handsome Coffee Roasters’ co-founder, Michael Phillips worked closely with Charlie in education for three years while still in Chicago.
In fact, experience at Intelligentsia is a common thread among all three of Handsome’s founders, Michael Phillips, Chris Owens and Tyler Wells. The three launched Handsome in 2011, supplying to wholesale accounts before opening a flagship roastery and coffee bar in downtown L.A.
In addition to his daily duties at Intelligentsia, the Oakland native Habegger was most recently the 2013 North Central Regional Barista Champion, reaching the U.S. finals in Boston and placing sixth.
