San Francisco city leaders are hoping the opening of a 12th Bay Area Phil’z Coffee location can help lead a revitalization of retail in the Tenderloin.

Phil’z just opened a new coffee bar in a 2,600 space in the neighborhood (399 Golden Gate Ave.) that had been vacant for four years since the departure of California Hastings College.

“We saw the Tenderloin as a clear opportunity to be located in the very heart of San Francisco,” Phil’z CEO recently told the San Francisco Business Times. “The neighborhood is of the most progressive and we are excited be part of the change underway in the Tenderloin.”

Phil’z Coffee’s first store opened in 2003 at 24th and Folsom Street under the guidance of founder Phil Jaber.
