Video: Tech Firm SAP Partnering with Fedecafé for Farmer Training

The German multinational business software provider SAP is partnering with the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia (Fedecafé) for a technology training program designed to help family farmers in Colombia.

Colombia is currently the world’s fourth largest coffee producer, and Fedecafé says they hope the program will help small-scale member farmers keep up to date with or surpass the abilities of technologically savvy producers throughout the world.

The program involves giving away some 5,000 tablet computers outfitted with SAP business software to farmers. Basic functions for the program include enabling farmers to set up and check email accounts, establishing an online network of small farmers, and allowing farmers to easily find daily coffee prices. The groups are enlisting younger, computer-savvy people to help train farmers who may not have used a computer before, and some 500 farmers are expected to be fully trained on the program by the end of this year.

This SAP-produced video, farmer Luis Fernando Tobon discusses the important role of coffee along the northern edge of the country.
