In this week’s episode of Unpacking Coffee, Kandace and Ray chat with Darleen Scherer, who earlier this year opened Supercrown Coffee Roasters in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y.
A former barista competition judge and executive committee member of the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s Roaster’s Guild, Scherer is especially well-known in coffee circles as the co-founder of Gorilla Coffee, an upscale roastery that launched in 2002. She left Gorilla in late 2014, eventually launching Supercrown around a 1,700-square-foot roasting headquarters and retail bar at 8 Wilson Avenue.
Scherer plans an ambitious online subscription program consisting of at least 52 coffees annually, offered in weekly or twice-monthly packages. Single-origin coffees in 8.8-ounce-capacity compostable Biotrē bags will be packed inside recycled cardboard boxes that include photo corners to hold swappable cards, customized for each coffee.
