A Los Angeles-based startup called Dice Provisions is betting on consumer trends towards cold coffee and convenience with the launch of Dice Coffee Ice Cubes.

Designed to keep cold coffee drinks cold without dilution, the nitrogen-frozen cubes are made from commercially cold-brewed coffee coming from a private-label roaster California. The cubes are marketed as organic, dark-roasted craft coffee.

“We designed Dice Coffee Ice Cubes for people who love great coffee but don’t want the hassle of making it at home,” Dice Provisions Co-Founder and CEO Gaelan Simpson recently told Daily Coffee News. “Freezing coffee at home can get messy, and achieving the right flavor profile is tricky. Plus, homemade coffee cubes often result in inconsistency, leading to watered down, flavorless iced coffee as the ice melts.”

Simpson said the brew made into cubes is slightly more concentrated than a standard cup of coffee or cold brew, but not so concentrated as to overpower the base drink.

“Cold brew brings out a depth of flavor and body that doesn’t interfere with personal taste preferences, which is why we choose this method,” Simpson said, later adding, “We designed [the cubes] to complement your favorite coffee-infused beverages by adding a smooth, robust flavor.”

The Dice cubes are packaged in durable and resealable plastic bags destined for the frozen aisle of the grocery store. Each bag contains 24 ounces, or six servings, of coffee cubes with an MSRP of $12.99.

“Using our nitro-freezing method, we preserve the coffee’s integrity, ensuring Dice cubes retain peak freshness and bold taste without any bitterness or acidity,” Simpson said. “The freezing process locks in the flavor, so every cube remains rich and full bodied until you’re ready to use it.”

Simpson said the cubes remain individually intact under normal grocery shopping conditions for about an hour after leaving the freezer before melting alters their structure.

“When bagged with other cold items, our cubes stay frozen and individual for the duration of a standard grocery trip,” Simpson said. “It would require extreme conditions, like leaving the bag in a hot car for an extended period of time, for the cubes to fully melt and refreeze into a block. Even then, the flavor remains intact.”

Dice Provisions is a portfolio company of the venture capital startup Good Mood Ventures LLC, which was founded by Simpson and her business and life partner, Michael Kamins. The Dice venture draws upon their combined backgrounds in consumer goods and marketing.

Self-described “coffee connoisseurs,” Simpson and Kamins consulted with numerous experienced coffee professionals for the inaugural product, while others may soon be coming.

“This is the fun part. We’re excited to expand into other varieties, including decaf, mocha, and some fun seasonal SKUs,” said Simpson. “We’re also working closely with our roasters to explore the best origins and blends, including both robusta and arabica options.”

Currently, Dice Frozen Coffee Cubes are available at the Co-Opportunity Market in Santa Monica and Vicente Foods in Brentwood.

“We’re exploring wholesale options to bring Dice Coffee Ice Cubes to cafes, bars, and restaurants that want to elevate their coffee offerings,” Kamins told DCN. “We believe Dice can bring something unique and fun to these settings, offering customers a more consistent and premium coffee experience.”
