Sample roasting, a standard practice in green coffee evaluation and purchasing, is generally considered a means to an end.
Yet a new small-scale competition led by Nicaraguan green coffee specialist Gold Mountain Coffee Growers is giving sample roasting a small moment on the podium, offering numerous prizes for the top-scoring sample roasts of a single high-end coffee.
“Sample roasting abilities and experiences vary widely across the industry, and even the best roasters find it challenging to roast coffees processed in innovative and new ways,” Gold Mountain Coffee Growers CEO and Chief Farmer Ben Weiner said in an announcement of the contest. “The idea behind this competition is to foster education with sample roasting in the industry.”
Focused on education and camaraderie — and dare we say fun? — the Gold Mountain Coffee Growers Sample Roasting Competition 2024 requires a modest $35 entry fee for logistics. Entries will be capped at 50, with an entry deadline of Nov. 6. The competition is open to roasters anywhere.
Participating roasters will receive 200 grams of Gold Mountain’s Red Pacamara Carbonic Maceration “Cherry Syrup” Natural coffee. Roasters will return one 36-gram submission of roasted coffee to the address provided, including a description of how they went about the roast.
All participants will receive feedback on their roast plus a 1-year digital subscription to Roast Magazine.
At least 13 roasters will win prizes. The top prize will be 10 pounds of the Pacamara Carbonic Maceration coffee (a $360 value, according to Gold Mountain). Second place will receive five pounds of the coffee. Other prizes include:
- A set of six Gold Mountain cupping bowls
- The Book of Roast by Roast Magazine
- The Book of Green Coffee by Roast Magazine
- A 1-year print subscription to Roast Magazine
- Roast Magazine swag and 2024 Gold Mountain green coffee samples
