Coffee events, podcasting and consulting agency Map It Forward is launching a live online workshop called “Introduction to Regenerative Coffee Farming.”
The event series is scheduled to span three days, with a different language focus each day: Oct. 28 (English), Oct. 29 (Spanish) and Oct. 30 (Portuguese).
The series frames regenerative farming as a potential response to numerous threats facing coffee farmers and producers, such as climate change, labor shortages and rising production costs. The event also promises to address the forthcoming European deforestation-free law (EUDR), while sharing tactics to improve biodiversity and soil health.
The workshop is designed not only for producers, but for other actors such as roasters, coffee traders and cafe owners — all complicit parties in the current value structure of coffee.
“I believe we’ll look back at 2024 as the year we realized the coffee supply chain was completely out of balance and on the verge of collapse, due to broken business models,” Map It Forward Founder Lee Safar told Daily Coffee News. “For decades, the low barriers to entry meant a constant influx of new participants engaging in predatory pricing, leading to a race to the bottom. Businesses exploited producers, laborers, and consumers, failing to account for the long-term price of their so-called ‘business savvy.’ As we allowed these practices to continue, we collectively borrowed from our future — and now we can’t afford to pay the interest.”
Safar, who also hosts the Daily Coffee Pro Podcast by Map It Forward, noted that the event’s focus on regenerative agriculture isn’t merely about environmental sustainability; rather, it’s about producers and the industry being able to thrive through new tools to meet environmental challenges and stabilize business models.
“Producers have been telling us for years that if nothing changes, coffee only has 20 harvests left,” Safar said. “Without coffee, the entire supply chain collapses. So, I brought together producers, agronomists, and engineers practicing regenerative agriculture, and asked them, ‘Can we save coffee if we act now?’ They said, ‘Yes, but time is running out. We need to show people how to bring nature back into balance — there are no quick fixes.’ So here we are.”
Tickets for the live, online event cost $10 for producers. Tickets for non-producers cost $150 and include a bundle of 14 additional tickets that can be distributed to producers.
Guests who will be featured in the series include: Angela Barrero of Bodega de la Finca (Colombia); Murilo Bettarello of Izagro (Brazil); Felipe Croce of FAF Coffees (Brazil); Carlos Ordóñez of Grupo Monteverde (Colombia); and João Araujo of FAF Coffees.
