The Coffee Quality Institute (CQI), which runs the Q grader certification program for coffee professionals, is asking all coffee cuppers to take a short skills survey.

Open until Nov. 1 to Q graders and any other professionals who cup or evaluate coffee, the survey is designed to help the nonprofit organization evaluate the day-to-day activities and interests of working cuppers.

Its results will be used to inform the nonprofit’s future curriculum and programming developments.

“This is an important part of the 20th anniversary of the Q,” CQI CEO Michael Sheridan said in a recent announcement from the group. “We are so proud of our community and the role it has played in the evolution of the industry over the past 20 years. We spent 2024 celebrating that, and now we are looking to the future to ensure we are building the skills that cuppers need for the next 20.”

The survey is designed to be quick and easy, and is available in multiple languages. CQI said that the survey represents the “first phase of an intensive evaluation of skills in which CQI is engaged.”

“The role of cuppers has evolved significantly since CQI began our work professionalizing coffee tasters,” CQI Director of Education Services Emma Sage in the announcement. “We want to ensure that our trainings include the skills reflective of what the industry needs today. We will compare our results to our current curriculum as well as use it to build our program into the future.”
