Virginia-based Café Kreyol, the 2023 Roast magazine Roaster of the Year in the macro category, recently relocated into an expanded production facility.
Spanning more than 10,000 square feet within an industrial complex in Manassas, the new production headquarters includes the production roastery with a Loring S70 Peregrine roaster, packaging equipment, green coffee warehousing and storage, offices, a quality-control and cupping lab, and classrooms.
“We were already busting at the seams in 2022, and when we won Roaster of the Year, our business grew dramatically,” Cafe Kreyol President Joseph Stazzone recently told DCN. “We more than doubled in size for our production in a year, which we were no longer able to keep up with.”
Cafe Kreyol plans to use its new cupping laboratory to host Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) sanctioned classes, and also to host buying parties associated with the Cup of Excellence green coffee competition.
Cafe Kreyol maintains an ambitious direct-trading program, developing long-term, equitable relationships with coffee producers, while also focusing on high-end microlots. The company has built partnerships with producer groups in less common coffee origins such as Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with a stated mission to help alleviate poverty in coffee-growing communities. Cafe Kreyol also imports and sells green coffee.
In addition to opening opportunities for educational programming, the move into the larger facility might also allow for expanded green coffee operations.
Said Stazzone, “We have been working on growing our presence in Ethiopia, and sharing those special coffees more and more with our customers.”
