Americano? It’s Canadiano Now, Says Kicking Horse Coffee

Following Donald Trump’s threats to apply tariffs to Canadian imports, British Columbia-based Kicking Horse Coffee is urging Canadian coffee companies to rename Americanos to ‘Canadianos’, according to an IBB report. The politically tinged marketing initiative follows a practice that’s always been in place at the Kicking Horse flagship cafe in Invermere.

Loring Certified Roastmaster to Host two new Education Events

Michael de Renouard, one of three “Loring Certified Roastmasters” globally, according to the roasting equipment company, is hosting two new education events this spring. Renouard’s consultive masterclass is Feb. 8 at Archers Coffee, Sharjah, UAE, and his two-day TCRC workshop will take place at PLOT Roasting in London, England, on March 7-8.

Minimum Coffee Pay Rates Raised for Farmers in Rwanda

The Rwandan government recently announced new minimum pay rates for coffee farmers, based on kilos of cherries, equating to a 25% increase compared to last year’s rate. To counter Rwanda’s reduced exports from the 2023/2024 year, efforts are being refocused on replacing the country’s aging coffee trees to boost productivity, according to a recent report from Farmers Review Africa.

GR8 Coffee Festival Returns to Croatia’s Capital

Following a successful debut last May, the GR8 Coffee Festival is returning to Lauba in Zagreb, Croatia, on April 10-12. Attendees can sample premium coffees, participate in interactive workshops and masterclasses, witness barista competitions and attend a cooking zone with coffee as a key ingredient. New Owner for Populace Coffee Flagship in Bay City, Michigan

After nearly eight years in Downtown Bay City, Michigan, the Populace Coffee flagship cafe will have a new owner on March 1. Populace will continue to roast coffee for its online business and wholesale partners, and the new owner will keep serving Populace’s coffee for the foreseeable future, according to a Meta post from the company.

Starbucks Joins U.S. Food Waste Pact

Starbucks recently joined the U.S. Food Waste Pact, becoming the second fast-food restaurant to do so, according to a recent ACCESS Newswire report. The coffee company said it aims to reduce its U.S. food waste by 50% over the next five years.

Chamberlain Coffee Opens First Cafe in Los Angeles

On Jan. 30, influencer Emma Chamberlain surprised her Instagram followers with the announcement of the opening of the first Chamberlain Coffee shop in Los Angeles, at the Westfield Century City Mall. Eater LA has more.

New Video Course on European Sustainability Regulations for Brazilian Coffee Growers

Ahead of multiple new EU regulations on sustainable coffee coming into effect, the Brazilian coffee exporters association Cecafé, along with the German Coffee Association and the Global Coffee Platform Brazil, have launched Portuguese-language video courses. Coffee producers or other stakeholders seeking compliance guidance can access the courses here.

ICO Releases Monthly Coffee Report for January 2025

The International Coffee Organization released its monthly global coffee market report for January 2025. The report showed the ICO Composite Indicator Price (I-CIP) as averaging US$3.1012 per pound, a 3.5% increase from December 2024.

Scooter’s Coffee Drops Plant-based Milk Upcharge

The fourth-largest coffee chain in the U.S., Scooter’s Coffee, recently removed its plant-based milk upcharge in its more than 800 locations across 29 states.
