Bloomberg: U.S. Roasters Avoiding Brazilian Coffee After 50% Tariffs

United States-based green coffee buyers are avoiding new Brazilian contracts and seeking ways to circumvent higher rates in existing agreements following the 50% tariff on Brazilian imports imposed earlier this month, according to a Bloomberg report that surveyed brokers, exporters and roasters.

Mill City’s RoastPATH Launches Predictive Profiling Tool

Minneapolis-based Mill City Roasters rolled out Path Intelligence, a predictive profiling tool within its RoastPATH software platform. The tool provides access to over 500,000 roast profiles across multiple harvest seasons, helping roasters optimize new coffees with data on markers like finish temperature and development phase duration. Path Intelligence is included in all paid RoastPATH tiers and available as a limited demo for others.

Lucky Goat Coffee Names Jim Brady Head Roaster

Tallahassee, Florida-based coffee roaster Lucky Goat Coffee Co. recently appointed Jim Brady as its new master roaster. A longtime roasting educator and SCA volunteer, Brady brings more than 20 years of specialty coffee experience, most recently including four years as a roaster at Starbucks. 

Jonathan Gagné Releases The Physics of Espresso

Astrophysicist Jonathan Gagné has published his second book, “The Physics of Espresso,” available through consultant Scott Rao’s web store. Following his first book “The Physics of Filter Coffee,” this work features years of research with hundreds of drawings, graphs and photos.

Bluewater Launches U.S. “On Tour” Series in LA

Swedish water innovation company Bluewater is kicking off its U.S. tour at Coffee Fest Los Angeles (Aug. 22-23, 2025), showcasing how its reverse osmosis technology impacts coffee taste.

Black Rock Coffee Bar Officially Files for IPO

U.S. coffee chain Black Rock Coffee Bar has officially filed for an IPO in New York with a targeted valuation exceeding $1 billion. The chain’s revenue rose over 24% in the first half of 2025, according to a Reuters report.

DoorDash Launches Iced Coffee Index to Track Consumer Stress

DoorDash has created an Iced Coffee Index (ICI) to measure “consumer stress” based on iced coffee order volumes and sentiment surveys. As DoorDash sees it, more iced coffee is associated with higher stress. Last quarter’s ICI hit 85/100, with orders spiking on days in which stressful national news broke. 

Salto Coffee Partners on Magnus Blend Fundraiser

Colorado-based Salto Coffee has partnered with The White Line Foundation on a collaboration blend honoring Magnus White, a junior Olympic cyclist killed by a reckless driver. Proceeds support The White Line’s mission to make roads safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

More Katz Coffee Coming to University of Houston

The University of Houston Alumni Association is supporting the installation of a Katz Coffee cart at the university’s Law Center as part of a pilot program for late-night study sessions. Through the university partnership. Katz Coffee will also be available in bags and K-Cups at campus markets.
