Some of the world’s brightest minds around coffee are preparing to convene in Lisbon this October as the Association for the Science and Information on Coffee (ASIC) celebrates its 30th conference

Taking place Oct. 27-31 at the Rectory of the University of Lisbon, the conference is billed as a comprehensive look at coffee science from seed to cup, with tracks spanning agronomy (genetics, pests and diseases, climate), chemistry (composition and aroma), technology (processing, roasting, extraction and decaffeination) and human health.

ASIC has finalized the sessions and posters for the in-person event, including an opening keynote session featuring Illycaffé Chairman Andrea Illy and Global Coffee Platform Executive Director Annette Pensel.

Other confirmed speakers include Richard Stadler, Rodrigo Cunha, Andrew Smith, Cécile Chéron-Bessou, Benoît Bertrand, Dora Batista and Lucas Louzada Pereira.

In a letter to other coffee scientists and potential guests, ASIC President Astrid Nehlig also encouraged guests to attend the conference remotely. Schedule and registration information can be found here

Nehlig nodded to Portugal’s deep associations with the coffee sector, specifically as it relates to scientific contributions regarding coffee leaf rust resistance.

“The Timor hybrid, the most valuable source of resistance to CLR, was discovered, characterized, and provided by a research center in Portugal to different coffee-growing countries,” Nehlig wrote. “This seminal work represented one of the major breakthroughs for coffee breeding, giving rise to the vast majority of the Arabica coffee varieties cultivated worldwide.”

The ASIC conference is typically held once every two years, often alternating between host countries that predominantly consume coffee and countries that predominantly produce coffee. ASIC was founded in Paris in 1966.
