On the ground floor of a post-Soviet residential block, the cafe Bonne Bouche opens up to the street with wide glazing, summer terraces and a colorful pastry program. The 200-square-meter (about 2,150 square feet) café brings a bright, sunlit front hall together with a softly lit inner room, wrapping both in rounded terrazzo surfaces and warm yellow upholstery.
“Our project’s specialty is how it fits into the urban space. We widened the windows and opened the facade as much as possible,” Dmytro Bonesko, an art director at Ukraine-based YOD Group, which led the design,” told DCN. “We have expanded the space by adding summer areas. A well-thought-out landscape design turned a piece of lawn in front of the house into a cozy forest glade. A podium with tables on the facade allows you to feel the pulse of the city.”
In the bright front room, a rounded communal table and the bar counter — both in Italian terrazzo — provide anchors, while yellow upholstered chairs from Ukranian brand Woo “radiate warmth,” according to a project description.
Deeper inside, a second hall without direct sunlight shifts the atmosphere, as a wall-sized light panel acts like a backlit city light, providing the primary illumination with biodynamic settings that transition from richer morning ambience to a cozier evening glow.
From the communal table to wall niches, curves and radial details tie the project together. Those curves are reinforced by the soft-edged sofas, armchairs and Noom-brand seating. Abstract graphics echo the terrazzo palette, keeping the visual rhythm light and energetic, according to the designers.
The outdoor area adjacent to the café consists of a summer terrace protected from the sun by a pergola and a stepped podium next to the main entrance. The pergola rests on a green area augmented by existing pine trees, with donut-shaped yellow poufs.
“This place has become the favorite Instagrammable zone for visitors,” the designers said. “The second outdoor area is a wide staircase with integrated tables and soft yellow seat cushions. The gray color of the tiles of the steps resembles sun-burned boards. Thanks to this shade, the podium delicately mimics the facade of the building.”
