This week’s episode of Unpacking Coffee checks in with Jake Deome, the founder and coffee director for Seattle’s Looking Homeward Coffee, who hopped a train for an in-studio interview at Unpacking Coffee’s home base in Portland, Oregon.

Deome began his specialty coffee journey in Sacramento, where he donned virtually every hat from register worker to quality control manager before relocating to Seattle and launching Looking Homeward last year.

Looking Homeward boasts a rotating roasted coffee lineup that favors high-quality, traceable, single-origin offerings in bright and colorful bags — designed by Deome himself — that recall a sense of home in their own special way.

“I find a lot of inspiration in stamps,” Deome told K-Ray. “[I] find different stamp designs and then I recreate them in Illustrator. I then build different designs off of those designs and do a lot of really cool, fun things.”

While Deome remains tight-lipped about the specifics, he plans to make Seattle even more of a permanent home with a forthcoming retail location. Here’s the full episode!

Unpacking Coffee is a show discovering new coffee roasters one episode at a time led by Kandace and Ray of the Portland-based studio Needmore Designs, which specializes in coffee, wine and lifestyle brands.
