The second International Coffee Convention (ICC) is coming to Mannheim, Germany, this October, with a wide-ranging program that includes experimental tastings, new research discoveries and multiple tracks for actors throughout the coffee chain.
Delivering the keynote address at the 2024 ICC will be International Coffee Organization Executive Director Vanusia Nogueira, while the event overall will delve into the theme “Coffee in Transition.”
“It addresses the entire coffee industry, from farmer, through trader, roaster, machine manufacturer to the coffee shop or coffee bar owner,” ICC Co-Founder and Co-Director Steffen Schwarz recently told DCN.
Schwarz, who is also the managing director of German coffee training and research center The Coffee Consulate, co-created the ICC with event management expert Michel Maugé, and the inaugural event came one year ago.
Taking place Oct. 17-18 at the Reiss Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim, the event is expected to be even larger this year.
According to the organizers, the program will explore tracks including:
- EUDR (European Deforestation Regulation): Discussion on policies affecting land use and deforestation in coffee farming, aiming for sustainable practices.
- Nagoya Protocol and Coffee Genetic Diversity: Exploring multiple coffee species and their potential benefits for future coffee resilience and sustainability.
- Coffee Fermentation: Innovations in fermentation processes and their impact on coffee quality and industry practices.
- Novel Food Regulation: Current status and solutions for utilizing coffee by-products to ensure sustainability and support coffee farmers.
- Health Claims in Coffee: Examination of nutritional benefits and substantiation of health claims related to coffee consumption.
- Coffee Byproducts: Potential applications and strategies for creating a sustainable coffee cultivation ecosystem using coffee byproducts.
- Café Crème: The “hidden champion” of coffee specialties, focusing on raising its profile.
- Freshness and Ripeness: Demystifying the obsession with freshness in roasted coffee.
The 2024 ICC will also include several rare cup tastings, including tastings of the Liberica, Excelsa and Stenophylla varieties. One key presentation will explore a new study on the impact of post-roast maturation on coffee’s sensory experience.
The event will also feature the “Kaldi Awards,” honoring lifetime achievement and efforts in green coffee cultivation, roasting and preparation.
