Japanese coffee equipment manufacturer Hario recently launched a whimsical version of its V60 dripper called the Suiren, as well as a new digital pourover brewing scale called the Polaris.

Hario Suiren Pourover Cone

Following two years of development, the Hario Suiren turned its first heads this past April during a reveal at the SCA Expo in Chicago.

Named for the Japanese word for “water lily,” the Suiren maintains the same fundamental brewing properties of Hario’s classic V60 pourover cone with a more aesthetically striking structural configuration.

“While exploring new dripper designs, we questioned whether the walls between the ribs, a key feature of the conical V60 dripper, were truly necessary,” Sarara Matsuo, a Hario sales representative and trade administrator for North America, told Daily Coffee News. “This led to the novel idea of removing these walls, allowing the ribs to stand independently. To achieve this, we adopted an assembly-type design.”

Its 12 petal-shaped ribs support any V60-compatible paper. Users insert the ribs, which are available in six different colors, into the base in any order.

In either transparent black or red, white and blue tri-color, the Suiren is available for purchase now for $32.50 through the Hario USA website. Packs of six additional ribs in various colors are sold separately.

The Polaris, which quietly rolled out over the summer, provides brew ratio calculations, then displays the progress of brewing as a percentage in real time.

The scale tracks total anticipated weight of water in the ratio, rather than taring for each pour.

“This enables users to complete brew ratio calculations on the scale itself, making it easier to create recipes,” said Matsuo. “By relying on precise calculations instead of intuition, Coffee Scale Polaris helps reduce mistakes in concentration. There’s no need to manually calculate each pour anymore. Just follow the percentage until reaching 100%.”

The scale offers precision down to 0.1 gram up to a maximum weight of 2,000 grams (just over 70 ounces). A built-in timer starts automatically with the first pour, button on the back of the scale allows users to activate or deactivate beeping.

Not yet available through Hario USA, the Coffee Scale Polaris is being sold through Hario’s Amazon store for $63.35.
