Avercasso, the Taiwanese maker of the AI-driven green coffee analysis and sorting machine called the CS One, just launched a smaller version called the CS Lite.

Designed for home roasters and low-volume commercial roasters, the Lite coffee sorter employs much of the same internal hardware and AI capability of the larger model as it works to quickly detect and automatically remove green coffee beans exhibiting primary and secondary defects, as defined by the Specialty Coffee Association.

“We define nano roasters as small-scale coffee producers, often roasting less than 100 kilograms per week,” a representative of Avercasso (style in lowercase “avercasso” by the company) told Daily Coffee News via email. “The CS Lite is specifically tailored for this audience, helping them achieve precision sorting with efficiency and flexibility.”

Like its predecessor, the Lite model also employs dual 4K cameras inside, while both models come equipped with AI modules tailored to sorting natural- or washed-process coffees. Both models seek out defects — such as insect damage, breakage or mold — as well as foreign matter.

The CS Lite scans up to 2.5 kilograms of green coffee per hour, which is half the speed of the CS One, within a physical format bearing an even stronger resemblance to a mini drum roaster. The Lite boasts a 2.5-kilo-capacity hopper, although it is not expandable like that of the CS One.

The machine’s analytical feature set is also streamlined for smaller-scale operations. Avercasso’s AI modules tailored to a growing list of processes — such as honey process, anaerobic and more — are a subscription-based offering for CS Lite owners, priced at $500 per year, whereas CS One owners gain unlimited access to all additional modules as a one-time purchase.

Additionally, the CS Lite does not generate the CS One’s post-sorting reports, which identify percentages of each defect type per batch.

The advanced image recognition technology Avercasso applies to green coffee was developed with support from its parent company AVer Information Inc., a New Taipei City-based audio-visual electronics manufacturer specializing in cameras and software for surveillance applications, video conferencing and more.

Avercasso initially revealed the CS One green coffee sorter in October 2023 at the HOST trade show in Milan.

Pricing for the CS Lite is set at $10,000 for machines that will be available for shipping to United States customers by March 2025, according to the company.
