155 Names Added to Brazil’s ‘Dirty List’ of Employers

The Brazilian Ministry of Labor and Employment added 155 names to what is known as the “dirty list,” the register of employers who have been found to subject workers to slave-like labor. There are now a total of 745 names on the list, which is updated every six months, according to an article in Agência Brasil. Within the current list, coffee farming is second only to cattle ranching in the number of employers. The Brazilian government said it rescued more than 200 coffee workers from “slave-like” conditions in 2024 alone. 

Employees at Anodyne Coffee, a FairWave Company, Plan to Unionize in Milwaukee

A group of employees at Anodyne Coffee in Milwaukee have announced their intent to unionize, according to an Urban Milwaukee report. Anodyne was acquired by FairWave in 2023.

Ethiopia Beats Record Coffee Export Revenue Over Past Nine Months

The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA) has announced that Ethiopia hit a record $1.5 billion USD coffee export revenue over the past nine months. According to sources in the Ethiopian News Agency, the revenue was boosted not only by high prices, but by higher-than-expected export volume.

Results are in for the 2nd Annual Nicaragua Golden Attribute Competition 

The winners of the 2nd edition of the Golden Attribute Competition, hosted by Sajonia Estate Coffee, a leading Nicaraguan coffee exporter, were announced earlier this week at the Sajonia Mill in Matagalpa. Some of the winning coffees will be showcased at the upcoming Specialty Coffee Expo (SCA) in Houston later this month. Samples of the winning coffees can be requested here.

Coffeejack V2 is Getting Jacked on Kickstarter

A new gear-driven portable espresso machine called the Coffeejack V2 has raised nearly $400,000 on Kickstarter. The device utilizes hand-powered rotation and converts it into linear piston motion via a high-torque planetary gearbox, achieving over 9 bars of pressure, according to the creators. The original Coffeejack launched in 2019

TricorBraun Flex Launches its PolyRecycle Store Drop-Off Bags

Woodinville, Washington-based flexible packaging company TricorBraun Flex just launched its PolyRecycle Store Drop-off recyclable bag. The new packaging features a one-way degassing valve, protects against oxygen and moisture and is customizable by size and surface. Each bag also carries a How2Recycle Store Drop-off label for use with  participating recycling locations.

Rightway Parking Ranks US Airport Coffee

Travel parking solutions company Rightway Parking recently released new consumer research on the coffee scene at 20 U.S. airports. The research found that the average cost of a coffee drink was $4.56, with the average prices of the two largest chains varying widely, from $6.79 at Starbucks to $4.06 at Dunkin. Miami International Airport was found to have the most affordable average cup ($4.06), as well as the highest customer satisfaction rating. 

AeroPress Launches the Clear XL

AeroPress recently introduced its latest model, the AeroPress Clear XL, featuring a 20-ounce capacity. The first standard-size AeroPress Clear and the first AeroPress XL were each launched in 2023. 

PrimeVent Launches as Standalone Company Focused on Degassing

St. Paul, Minnesota-based PrimeVent LLC announced its emergence as a standalone company from sibling company FlexPak Services. PrimeVent will focus specifically on degassing valves for packaging. The company says its flagship valve reduces plastic waste by 94% compared to traditional button valves. The PrimeVent company is being led by Clive Jacobs.

Coffee Underground Celebrates 30 Years as a Greenville Staple

Coffee Underground is celebrating 30 years as a community coffee shop staple in downtown Greenville, South Carolina. The locally owned shop, which spans three rooms, is hosting an anniversary party on May 1.
