Italian grinder and burr maker Mazzer today revealed the Mazzer Mini G, a grind-by-weight version of its Mazzer Mini grinder, which was also recently modernized and re-introduced.

Launched earlier this month, the new standard Mazzer Mini by the Venice-based company features a slight reduction of its already compact footprint. With a new 280-gram-capacity hopper (9.8-ounce), the Mini stands 45 millimeters (1.78 inches) shorter than the original, which launched in 1995.

A new custom asynchronous motor inside both new Mini models — designed for light-duty commercial applications — boosts grinding speeds by more than 50% compared to older models.

Mazzer also added a touchscreen control panel to the new Mini, while the grind-by-weight firmware of the Mini G is supported by a conventional digital display. Two new sets of 64-millimeter flat steel burrs are available for the new machines, accommodating darker or lighter roasts, respectively.

Both new Minis will be on display at the Mazzer booth (#1039,) at this week’s SCA Expo in Houston, where visitors will be able to taste comparisons of coffees brewed from grounds by both new burr sets.

“Both sets of burrs are designed specifically for espresso,” Mazzer Marketing Manager Cristina Scarpa told Daily Coffee News. “To offer the possibility to customize the grinder, a brand-new optional second set of burrs has been specifically designed. Like all Mazzer burrs, they are engineered and manufactured in Mazzer’s state-of-the-art production facilities near Venice.”

An improved anti-static de-clumping mechanism helps reduce retention, while the design maintains stepless adjustments and portafilter activation systems beneath a redesigned chute. The load cell built into the portafilter holder on the Mini G increases its height by 1.5 inches compared to the new standard Mini.

“Mini G maintains the classic style of the iconic Mazzer Mini while integrating top-notch grind-by-weight technology,” said Scarpa. “It streamlines the grinding workflow while minimizing coffee waste as it automatically maintains the set dose weight regardless of the grind setting.”

A “Vibration Filtering Algorithm” in the Mini G maintains accurate weight-based doses, despite potential vibrations on an active cafe counters, according to the company. It doses either directly into a portafilter or into an included custom magnetic stainless steel dosing cup.

The new Minis arrive roughly 1.5 years after Mazzer launched its first grind-by-weight machine, the the Mazzer Kony Sg and the Philos, a light-duty single-dose grinder that outweighs the legacy Mini by five pounds while also featuring 64-millimeter burrs spun within the same range of 1,400-1,600 RPM.
