Grounds for Health Launches Matching Fundraiser for May

Vermont-based cervical cancer prevention nonprofit Grounds for Health just launched a fundraising campaign to bring accessible and affordable HPV testing to women in coffee-growing areas of Ethiopia and Kenya. Private companies Tony’s Coffee, Swiss Water, Royal Coffee and Royal NY are matching donation dollars through the month of May. GFH is attempting to provide self-screening kits to 6,000 women this summer by meeting a $60,000 goal.

K&F Owner Zarfas Coffee Auctioning All Equipment in Portland

Zarfas Coffee, Inc., the owner of longtime Portland, Oregon, roasting company K&F, is selling all its equipment assets through an online auction on May 5. The auction includes multiple legacy Sivetz roasters.

New York Times on EUDR’s Effects on Ethiopian Smallholders

The New York Times got into coffee this week with a news piece on the upcoming European deforestation-free supply chain (EUDR) law, and how its enforcement may shift trade dynamics to the detriment of certain smallholder farmers in key origins like Ethiopia.

Satelligence and CIAT Announce Free EUDR Compliance Map

Satelligence and the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) said they are creating a free, high-quality, publicly accessible global map of coffee-growing areas. According to a LinkedIn post, the dataset for the year 2020 is intended to help businesses meet European deforestation-free compliance (EUDR).

Stumptown Introduces new Sustainable Packaging

Portland, Oregon-based Stumptown Coffee Roasters recently introduced its new coffee bag, made from a minimum of 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. The company is already using these new PCR bags for its limited-edition Vivid Bloom coffee, selling online and in cafes.

Portland Coffee Launches Premium Canned Cold Brews

Locally owned and operated Portland Coffee Roasters announced its first-ever ready-to-drink, locally produced canned cold brews, original and nitro. A launch party will be hosted at the flagship location on May 17.

Keurig Dr Pepper Quarterly Results Show Coffee Down, Soft Drinks Up

Keurig Dr Pepper reported its first-quarter earnings. A key takeaway was that unit sales of U.S. refreshment beverages rose by 11% at $2.3 billion, which were elevated by a favorable net price realization of 3% and a volume/mix growth of 8%, whereas U.S. coffee sales dropped about 4% to $900 million, attributed to higher green coffee costs.

Luckin Coffee Quarterly Results Reflect Aggressive Growth

China’s Luckin Coffee reported its first-quarter earnings, showing a 41.2% year-over-year increase in net revenue to $1.2 billion USD and a whopping 1,757 net new store openings across China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, amounting to 24,097 total stores to date.

Starbucks Quarterly Results Show Mixed Results in North America

Starbucks also reported its latest financial results from its 13-week fiscal second quarter. Its North American segment saw a net revenue increase over 1% from last year to $6.5 billion, mostly as a result of a 5% net growth in company-operated stores. The company said that growth was partially offset by a 1% decline in store sales, and a 4% decrease in commensurate transactions.

Starbucks 3D Prints a Drive-Through Store in Texas

The coffee company just opened its first 3D-printed store in the U.S., in Brownsville, Texas. AP News broke the story, with a Starbucks spokesperson confirming it was the company’s first 3D printed U.S. store, but declining to comment further.
