Wall Street Journal: Blank Street’s Not So Secret Weapon May Be Matcha

The Wall Street Journal brought some real talk this week with the headline, “How Do You Build a $500 Million Coffee Chain? By Selling Matcha to Teens.” The story outlines the growing chain’s investments in matcha based on trendiness and popularity amongst young New Yorkers with cash. 

Chronicling the Rapid Expansion of Michigan’s Haraz Coffee

Hamzah Nasser, the founder of Dearborn, Michigan-based Yemeni-focused company Haraz Coffee House, is planning to massively expand the chain, according to a New York Times report. The story said that “he originally sought to open cafes in Arab neighborhoods or near mosques. But his search has expanded to anywhere that’s young and diverse, or where families will linger late into the night and buy multiple rounds of $7.95 pistachio lattes.”

Angelino’s Coffee is Selling 16 #1 Cup of Excellence Coffees, Including in Pods

California roasting company Angelino’s Coffee proudly released a Cup of Excellence (CoE) Collection, a first-of-its-kind line of 16 top-ranked CoE-winning coffees. Notably, the company is making the ultra-premium coffees — many of which fetched hundreds of of dollars per pound — available in Keurig-compatible pods, as well as in fancy whole-bean tins. 

Starbucks Refutes Chinese Media Report Regarding Full Sale

Seattle-based coffee giant Starbucks refuted a report from Chinese media sources that claimed that the company was planning a full sale of its China operations, according to a Reuters report. China is the coffee chain’s second largest market. 

Caffe Ladro Launching ‘Coffee For Good’ with $3 Per Bag Donation

Seattle-based coffee company Caffe Ladro is launching a “Coffee For Good” campaign on July 1, with $3 from every bag of select coffee devoted to a nonprofit, starting with Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP). 

Panther Coffee Launches Instant Coffee

Miami-based Third Wave coffee pioneer Panther Coffee launched a specialty instant coffee, available in bulk orders or in six-pack boxes. Despite the quick-fix focus, the coffee product reflects a long-running relationship with Fazenda Santa Lucia in Carmo de Minas, Brazil, a farm run by Helcio Carneiro Pinto.

Calgary Journal Explores Realities of Coffee Producers in Peru

In 1964, the Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Maranura was the first cooperative established in Peru. Today it is a leader in the movement for coffee cooperatives throughout Peru to advocate for its producers and empower its farmers by pooling resources, negotiating directly with buyers for better prices, improving market access and sharing knowledge, according to a Calgary Journal report

World of Coffee Introduces I LOVE NY Coffee 

Family-owned coffee roasting company World of Coffee, Inc., based in New Jersey, just launched its officially licensed I LOVE NY Coffee. The 100% Arabica medium roast ground coffee blend will debut at the upcoming Specialty Food Association’s 2025 Summer Fancy Food Show.

Two New Coffee Blends to Support Manatees Launch Nationwide

Florida-based Manatee Coffee, which supports manatee conservation, has announced the addition of two new organic blends called Eco Brew (medium roast) and Coastal Reserve (dark roast). The coffees are launching nationwide at The Fresh Market.

Matters Coffee Contributes to a ‘Dam Fine Beer’ 

Three Westchester, New York-based businesses — Matters Coffee, Yonkers Brewing Company and The Green Growler — recently came together to create a coffee IPA called “Dam Fine Beer,” available at the two breweries while supplies last.
