A new coffee accessories maker called Laybird has left the nest with a new magnetic coffee scale system called the MagAttach Coffee Scale.

An April Kickstarter campaign raised more than $88,000, while pre-orders for the scale are continuing via an IndieGoGo campaign.

Magnetic attachments for the coffee scale include a dosing cup, a measuring cup and an extended platform for weighing portafilters, multi-cup pourover carafes or other larger items. All three pieces and the scale will be sold together for a retail price of $118 following the delivery of pre-orders, which are slated to begin next month.

“We conducted extensive testing to ensure the magnetic system doesn’t interfere with the load cell or affect the precision of the scale,” Gary Lin, co-founder of Laybird, told Daily Coffee News. “The magnets are strategically placed and calibrated to maintain accurate readings, regardless of the attachment in use.”

Across its three modes — standard, espresso and pourover — the 2,000-gram-capacity scale with 0.1-gram resolution offers automatic timer starts and stops, and flow rate and brew ratio displays. The espresso mode features auto tare. Compact and travel-oriented, the scale is coated in a metal nano-spray for water and scratch resistance, and its accessories are made of aluminum and steel.

Lin said that while the MagAttach was primarily conceived for home or travel use, it has also garnered the attention of coffee professionals.

“Some of our Kickstarter backers include cafe owners, coffee van operators and professional baristas,” said Lin. “While MagAttach is minimal in size, it doesn’t compromise on build quality or performance. It’s engineered to be tough enough for daily use in professional environments.”

Lin came from a background in retail product marketing to co-found Laybird with SCA-certified barista Vincent Chow. Both founders take inspiration from the robust specialty coffee culture of Australia, where they both live.

“We simply couldn’t find a scale that fit all our needs — compact, multi-functional and intuitive — so we decided to build one ourselves,” Lin told DCN. “After many internal discussions and countless prototypes, MagAttach was born.”

The company is registered in Delaware but operates primarily between Australia and China. Currently, the co-founders are spending most of their time in China in order to oversee manufacturing and quality control.

Beyond the MagAttach, Laybird is already readying additional products for future crowdfunding campaigns, including a powered tamper and an espresso distribution tool. A Laybird grinder is in development. The company is planning to launch direct web sales while exploring potential distribution partnerships in different markets.

“Our mission is to create thoughtfully designed tools that make coffee brewing easier, more enjoyable, and more accessible — without sacrificing performance,” said Lin. “It’s still early days, but we’re excited to keep pushing the boundaries of what coffee tools can be.”
