If there’s one thing dysfunctional workplaces could use, it’s an abundance of good coffee. Now, the U.S. House of Representatives has a new homegrown coffee supplier through an official vendor agreement with Puerto Rico-based Panorama Farm.
The Puerto Rican coffee farm and eco-tourism destination created by social entrepreneur Angelique Sina in 2021 now has coffees sold through the Longworth House Office Building Gift Shop. Through Panorama Farm’s nonprofit network, 100% of net profits are donated to youth entrepreneurship and education programs throughout Puerto Rico.
“From Las Marías, Puerto Rico, to Capitol Hill, this coffee carries the story of Puerto Rico’s talent, resilience and innovation,” Sina said in an announcement of the Capitol Hill launch. “We’re building a movement — one that breaks dependency and proves that nonprofits can operate with the discipline of business and the soul of community.”
Sina launched Panorama Farm with a goal to promote sustainable agriculture while capturing more value locally for Puerto Rican farmers. A former global relationships manager for the World Bank, Sina also created the nonprofit Friends of Puerto Rico, which galvanized millions of dollars of support for the island after Hurricane Maria.
The flagship coffee brand of Panorama Farm is Cafe Ama Love, which also supports the Friends of Puerto Rico efforts.
“This coffee — grown, roasted and made in Puerto Rico — is now being served in Congress,” Sina said. “It’s a powerful reminder that products made in America, especially from places like Puerto Rico, deserve a place in our national economy and in the conversations that shape its future.”
While official figures from the U.S. government are hard to come by these days, Puerto Rico is generally believed to produce just a fraction of 1% of the world’s coffee, while relying on imports to meet local demand.
Despite the relatively low volumes of production, the Puerto Rican coffee sector has focused on higher-quality arabica coffees and sales to the mainland U.S. specialty coffee market in recent years.
