German coffee equipment company Mahlkönig last week unveiled a critical piece of its expanding Grind-By-Sync connectivity platform, the Sync Scale.
Specifically designed for espresso, the scale sends time and weight data of shots from any espresso machine to a compatible grinder.
Alongside Mahlkönig’s major release of its first ever espresso machine, the Xenia, the new scale was revealed for the first time two weeks ago in conjunction with the HostMilano trade show in Italy. (Read all of DCN’s HostMilano 2025 coverage.)
The oblong, water-resistant Sync Scale is clad in powder-coated aluminum and displays shot time and weight on a heat-resistant screen as espresso accumulates in the cup.
Of its five operating modes for different workflows, two are Sync-enabled, using built-in Wi-Fi to send data to compatible grinders via the Mahlkönig Cloud.
The Sync System was first introduced at the HOST event in 2023 through a collaboration with La Marzocco, featuring the Mahlkönig E80 GBS grinder in communication with La Marzocco espresso machines.
At the same event, La Marzocco revealed its Connected Scale, whose data-sharing capability enables brew-by-weight and grind-by-weight modes in compatible espresso machines and grinders, respectively.
With its own smart scale to expand the Grind-by-Sync platform, Mahlkönig’s GBS-capable grinders include variations of E65W, E65T, E80W and E80T models.
In addition to Wi-Fi connectivity, these grinders’ digital settings indicators and self-adjustment mechanisms are key to their Sync compatibility, allowing the grinders to automatically reset their “zero” points for ongoing accuracy and consistency. The Sync Scale will also communicate with the new E64 WS home grinder.
Priced at $249.99, the Mahlkönig Sync Scale is available now in select countries, with availability planned to expand to the U.S. before the end of 2025.
