Swedish designer Gustaf Westman’s namesake studio has launched the Chunky Coffee Maker, a glazed ceramic manual pourover system built around the designer’s signature rounded forms and bright colors.
Intended for pairing with the brand’s Chunky Cup, the brewer is both a functional coffee device and a sculptural extension of Westman’s rounded design language, which offers rotund figures and dreamily swollen proportions. The glossy ceramic piece is the studio’s first product made specifically for brewing coffee.
“I think everything you do during the day should be colorful and fun,” Gustaf Westman recently told Daily Coffee News. “I’m very much in a period where I’m investigating different add-ons to my normal Objects [collection], and this was a pretty straightforward idea to start with. I do drink a lot of coffee.”
Preorders for the first run of Chunky Coffee Makers opened in late May through the Gustaf Westman online store and are currently sold out.
The brewer accepts either common wedge-shaped or fluted basket-shaped paper filters, while vertical channels molded into the filter holder support airflow and drainage. A single, relatively wide hole at the bottom allows brewed coffee to flow directly into a Chunky Cup, which is sold separately with a saucer.
Like other ceramics in Westman’s Objects collection, the brewer will be handmade in Portugal with a logo stamped on the base. Its design is intended to offer a simple brewing experience that aligns with the handleless, palm-filling ergonomics and stable profile of the Chunky Cup and saucer.
The aesthetics of the coffee maker are intended to spark joy, making an everyday ritual feel more playful. Its circular shape and sturdy vertical supports wrap around the cup, visually tying the act of brewing to the final drink.
“I love simple ideas, and symmetry is important to make an object easy to understand,” Westman said.
Westman founded the Stockholm-based design studio and brand Gustaf Westman in 2020. The studio makes furniture, custom design pieces, decor, ceramics and glassware. Beyond the Chunky Cup, the studio offers a Chunky Cup Mini demitasse and saucer set.
Products in the Objects line are sold through the studio’s website and select retailers in the United States, Europe and Asia.
