Will Frith has joined the growing team at Modbar, makers of stylized modular espresso, brewing and steaming systems known for bar-top elegance with more unsightly mechanisms hidden from customer view.
Frith has relocated to Portland to join the Modbar team as Facilitator of Coffee+People+Machines, a new position for the company, which has doubled in size this year to ten staffers. Asked what this math-form job title actually represents, Modbar sales director Mark Crawford told Daily Coffee News that Frith will be engaging with Modbar users to help them achieve best practices and optimize extraction goals. Additionally, Frith will represent the company at private installations at roasteries and cafés, and at coffee industry events and competitions, where he can occasionally be found volunteering as a sensory judge.
Frith comes to Modbar from Vietnam, where he has been involved in numerous green coffee quality improvement initiatives since late 2012. During that time, Frith also helped establish the coffee program at The New Black, an ambitious modular retail brand in Singapore. Prior to his work in Vietnam, Frith was roasting at Olympia Coffee Roasting, the 2013 Roast Magazine Micro Roaster of the Year.

“Unsightly” isn’t my top priority when pulling espresso.
