Maine-based specialty coffee roasting and retail stalwart Coffee By Design (CBD) has hired longtime coffee trainer Jeremy Behne as director of coffee and wholesale operations.

Behne comes to CBD — no, not that CBD — after most recently serving as director of coffee at North Carolina’s Larry’s Coffee Company, which, like CBD, is a certified B Corporation that has long maintained an emphasis on sustainable sourcing practices combined with local community involvement.

“I’ve worked with startup roasters and established companies. What drew me to CBD was the company’s rich history and its commitment to the community,” Behne said in a recent announcement from CBD. “After my first conversation with owners Mary Allen and Alan, I knew I wanted to be a part of that story and to continue to grow and enrich the legacy of great coffee brought to Maine by amazing people.”

A former wholesale trainer for Greenstreet Coffee Co. in Philadelphia, Behne is also an authorized Specialty Coffee Association trainer (AST), a past station instructor for the former SCAA’s Barista Camp, and a past lead instructor at Coffee Fest.

Behne’s appointment comes as CBD is celebrating its 25th business anniversary this year. The Portland-based company introduced a complete rebranding in 2017 while maintaining hundreds of wholesale and grocery accounts in addition to its roastery and four retail bars.
