NCA Economic Impact Report: US Consumers Spend $301 Million Per Day on Coffee

Consumers in the United States spent nearly $110 billion on coffee and related goods in 2022, which breaks down to approximately $301 million per day, according to a new economic impact report commissioned by the U.S. National Coffee Association (NCA).

The nonprofit trade association — whose membership includes coffee-related companies such as packaging manufacturers, equipment makers, logistics providers and more — last released a national economic impact report in 2015.

Figures from that report, which similarly underscored the coffee industry’s positive impact on the U.S. economy, became widely cited in the NCA’s public messaging. The group also leveraged the report in industry-supportive advocacy efforts in Washington D.C.

This 2023 report, which translates data from the 2022 calendar year, was conducted by Technomic, a market research firm that specializes in foodservice industries.

The study found that coffee supports more than 2.2 million U.S. jobs while generating more than $101.2 billion in wages. Incidentally, those figures translate into average wages per coffee job of $46,000 per year.

The study goes on to say that coffee represents approximately 1.3% of the U.S. economy, and is responsible for nearly $38 billion in federal, state and local tax receipts.

According to the report, the total economic impact of the coffee industry in the United States in 2022 was $343.2 billion, representing a notable 52.4% increase from the 2015 study.

In an announcement of the study release, NCA President and CEO Bill Murray stated, “This landmark study confirms the great news that coffee not only fuels our daily lives, it is a powerful engine for jobs, communities and the U.S. economy.”
