ICO Monthly Report Shows Higher Prices Based on Fundamentals
The International Coffee Organization (ICO) released its monthly report on commodity coffee prices, showing an upward price trend in June based on expectations for weaker-than-expected harvests in key coffee-producing countries.
South Dakota Coffee Company Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
Brookings, South Dakota-based coffee roasting and retail company Cottonwood Coffee has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in South Dakota bankruptcy court. The filing follows multiple other small business Chapter 11 petitions among coffee companies, including California’s Frinj Coffee and Colorado’s Ink! Coffee.
Report: EU Officials Not Inclined to Delay EUDR Enforcement
A letter obtained by the news agency Reuters suggests that EU officials are not inclined to delay implementation of new EU deforestation-free rules (EUDR), despite calls from some industry groups, including a consortium of large European coffee roasters.
Goodboybob Hosting ‘Meet the Producer’ Event with California Focus
Southern California’s Goodboybob Coffee Roasters is hosting a special “Top Dog meet the producer” event on Saturday, July 13, at its Santa Monica cafe. A special tasting will include coffees from boutique California coffee farm Sundays On Toro.
Study Finds PFAS in Coffee
A new study found higher levels of PFAS chemicals, a.k.a. “forever chemicals,” in the breast milk of pregnant women in New Hampshire who had higher intake of coffee, white rice, fish/seafood and eggs. Reminder: Chemical companies, including 3M and Dupont, actively suppressed knowledge related to human health and PFAS for decades.
Ethiopian Government Reports Record-High Exports and Revenue
The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority reported record-high annual coffee exports and revenue for the market year ending July 7. The reported numbers for the 2023/24 year were US$1.43 billion in export revenue from 298,500 tons of coffee. By comparison, the ECTA in 2022/24 reported 240,000 tons of exports generating $1.3 billion.
Brazilian President Presents $71.8 Billion Agribusiness Plan
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva last week proposed a record-high amount of funding for the country’s agricultural sector, including 400 billion reais (US$71.8 billion) through the country’s Plano Safra crop financing plan. Brazil is by far the world’s largest producer of green coffee.
Sacramento Coffee Shop Robbed Three Times, Gofundme Launched
An associate of a Sacramento coffee shop called Barrio launched a Gofundme campaign to support the owner. The shop has reportedly been targeted by thieves multiple times in recent weeks.
Fellow Electrifies its Atmos Vacuum Canister
Coffee equipment and accessories maker Fellow unveiled the Electric Atmos Vacuum Canister, a powered version of its original Atmos canister. The new product is available in matte black or “clear glass,” and automatically re-vacuums as coffee degasses over time.
Madcap Coffee Refreshes Brand and Subscription Service
Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Madcap Coffee last week unveiled a brand refresh, including redesigned 8-ounce coffee bags, a new website and a new streamlined subscription platform. The company said the new looks and features better highlight coffee producers while also catering to the customized needs of customers.
