Awareness of specialty coffee is newly heightened in South Central Pennsylvania with the opening of Consciousness Coffee.
In the borough of Lemoyne, just across the Susquehanna River from Harrisburg, Consciousness Coffee is opening eyes to myriad specialty options through a creative multiroaster program. The shop also offers a rotating selection of artisanal chocolates, plus fresh baked goods from Lemoyne’s own Massimo’s Italian Bakery.
Chocolate and coffee options rotate quarterly, as do the shop’s tea and kombucha selections. For coffee, each three-month cycle will include three new roasters. Consciousness Coffee launched in July with coffees from Lemoyne’s Lonely Monk Coffee Roasting, Harrisburg’s Little Amps Coffee Roasters, and Beacon, New York-based Trax Coffee Roasters.
The layout of the approximately 800-square-foot can accommodate pop-ups, art exhibits and other events, allowing for different flows of activity and energy. The interior currently offers murals of the cosmos and owls, while a growing community of artists will continue to add to to the shop’s decor and a growing gallery.
“Consciousness is something we all share, the experience of which is something that becomes less tangible the closer we get to defining it,” Consciousness Coffee Founder Jason Rounds told Daily Coffee News. “[This is] similar to the way excellent coffee experiences are over right as we reach the highest level of enjoyment.”
Formerly a barista in New York City while pursuing a degree in finance, Rounds took downtime during the pandemic to dive more deeply into his passion for coffee before ultimately changing career paths.
“The design and aesthetic of the space is an iterative process,” Rounds said “The aim is to represent the expression of our commitments.”
Rounds also remains committed to the local coffee scene. He counts at least nine inspiring coffee companies within a 10-mile radius.
“The local scene is incredible,” he said. “Consciousness hopes to serve all of these roasters and collaborate with all their cafes over time.”
Consciousness Coffee is located at 1 Lemoyne Square, Suite 108, in Lemoyne.
