The International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA) recently launched the Vital Impact Fund, designed to address the most urgent needs of women working in coffee.

The nonprofit organization noted that a “generous gesture” from one of its founders, Melissa Pugash, kickstarted the fund initiative. The fund will be overseen by IWCA Executive Director Blanca Castro.

“This global fundraising appeal aims to amplify the reach and depth of IWCA’s empowerment programs, directly impacting women, their families and their communities across the coffee industry,” the organization said in an announcement of the initiative.

According to the group, the fund may be used to address issues affecting women in coffee such as climate change, market instability and gender inequity.

The IWCA, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, is composed of 37 volunteer-driven national chapters: 27 chapters from major coffee-producing countries, and 10 from predominantly consuming countries.

All of the chapters are bound together by a common vision to empower and achieve equity for women in coffee throughout the world.
