Italian espresso equipment maker La Marzocco launched an all-new app last week, replacing separate apps for home and pro/commercial users.

In addition to all the scheduling and adjustment functions provided by the original La Marzocco Pro and La Marzocco Home apps, the new app introduces Coffee Station, a feature that allows users to create grouped pieces of equipment.

The app is available for free for Android or Apple devices.

Building upon La Marzocco’s recent efforts to establish ecosystems of connected machines and devices, the Coffee Station feature allows home users to connect a La Marzocco Connected Scale to a La Marzocco Pico grinder and a La Marzocco Linea Mini espresso machine.

The single, connected scale is designed for a seamless transition between grind-by-weight and brew-by-weight functions, with a simple move of the scale from the Pico grinder base to the Linea Mini tray.

For professional users, the Connected Scale can be attached with a custom portafilter holder to the Swan grinder, giving the grinder GBW functionality. When the scale needs to come out for a charge, the Swan can recall and repeat the number of burr rotations used to achieve the desired weight.

Brewing by weight is achieved through La Marzocco’s Auto Brew Ratio (ABR) system, which is built into many of the company’s existing commercial espresso machine models.

The new app brings together under one digital roof, so to speak, a number of products with connectivity features that La Marzocco has rolled out over the past two years. La Marzocco has also developed strategic partnerships with other manufacturers for device connectivity within that time, including collaborating with Acaia to develop the Connected Scale and rolling out the Sync system with professional grinder maker Mahlkönig.

“La Marzocco has made a significant investment in connectivity for the equipment that we produce, enabling us to add new features to existing equipment, offer insights into how we make coffee, and to connect equipment to facilitate that process,” La Marzocco Technical Product Manager Aric Forbing told Daily Coffee News. “As we move forward, we’re designing products to fit into the Coffee Station ecosystem and to harness the power of this connectivity.”
