Nordic roaster maker Roest just launched a new flagship sample roaster called the L100 Ultra.
The company revealed the machine at last month’s SCA Expo in Houston, where its P3000 production roaster also happened to win a Best New Product Award. (Find all of DCN’s 2025 Expo coverage here.)
“While developing the Roest P3000, our first production roaster, we uncovered new ways to push the boundaries of performance and precision. That journey inspired major upgrades to our sample roaster, and the result is the L100 Ultra,” Roest CEO and Co-Founder Trond Simonsen said in an announcement just prior to the trade show. “It’s built with our most tech-savvy and passionate users in mind — and we’re proud to say it delivers.”
Building off the fundamental technology and aesthetic design of the original Roest (formerly Røst) machine and its successors in the S100 and L100 lines, the 200-gram-capacity L100 Ultra features a striking new touchscreen interface. Inside, the machine features a new motor that allows the drum to turn in reverse direction, as well as numerous tweaks for improved airflow.
“This is the top-of-the-line product with several updates that are new, including the reversible drum with ‘Counterflow Mode,'” Roest Interim Head of Marketing Lauren Alkire told Daily Coffee News. “Exclusive to the L100 Ultra, this gives the option for direct airflow to the heart of the beans for ultra-efficient, gentler heat transfer to the beans.”
According to Roest, the redesigned airflow and counterflow mode can also reduce electric-heat power requirements for a given roast. The counterflow mode can be employed in lower-temperature roasting or for higher-temp roasts, with 200-gram batches finishing in as little as four minutes, according to the company.
The L100 Ultra also features improved placement of the bean temperature probe, as well as an internal air pressure sensor used for precise monitoring and application of airflow.
“That is something that people have wanted to have included. They’ve inserted their own pressure sensors into it, but now we have that in the machine itself,” Roest Content and Event Manager Kimberley Bates told Daily Coffee News in Houston. “We’re working on the controls to be able to use that to then control your protocols and while roasting.”
All of this data can be transmitted from the machine to external devices via an improved 5GHz WiFi transmitter.
Another April announcement from Roest is its new distribution partnership with Oakland, California-based green coffee and home roasting equipment seller Sweet Maria’s, which now stocks the S100 Plus and L100 Plus machines for U.S. customers.
Roest is currently taking orders directly for the L100 Ultra for €8,290 (US$8,890) for direct shipments from Norway slated to begin next month.
