Norwegian roasting equipment maker Roest (formerly Røst) is rolling out the L100 variant of its flagship AI-driven hybrid sample roaster. At the same time, the company is prepping its next big release, an electric 2-kilo commercial roaster called the P2000.
Roest will have the L100 on display at the Specialty Coffee Expo in Boston this week (booth #331), where representatives will also share information about the upcoming P2000 roaster.

Roest L100 Sample Roaster
The electric-powered Roest L100 enters the market with black panels as opposed to the white panels of a 2020 pilot version or the wood panels of the original Roest model, the S100.
Handles composed of PTFE polymer provide durability and heat resistance. The L100 includes the same environmental and bean temperature sensors as the S100, while adding new drum and exhaust temperature sensors.
Two more slots are available on the L100 for additional sensors, including one K-type sensor and one PT100 type sensor, for a potential total of six sensors that can be fitted upon customers’ request.
“The combination of design and more sensors makes the sample roasters ideal for research purposes and also for coffee businesses with advanced requirements,” Roest Head of Marketing Veronika Galova Bolduc told Daily Coffee News. “The more accurate data we can provide about coffee during roasting, the better for consistency, and more importantly, new knowledge we can gain from it.”
Reinforced agitation paddles inside the drum of the L100 are three times stronger than those of the S100, while a proximity sensor on the L100 alerts users to presence of beans waiting to be cleared from the cooling tray.

“When you have a fully automated roaster, you might find yourself being too focused on the other important tasks of your job,” said Bolduc, “so it’s really helpful when the machine lets you know you should remove coffee from the cooling tray to avoid two batches mixing in together in a tray.”
The Roest P2000 Commercial Roaster
Featuring a drum and hot-air roasting hybrid system similar to what’s found in other Roest machines, the larger P2000 is designed to roast batches in the 1-2 kilogram range (2.2-4.4 pounds).
The machine weighs in at about 60 kilos (132 pounds) while running on 3,500-5,500 watts (1 or 3 phase). Whereas the sample roasters pull hot air through the openings at either end of the drum, the P2000 pushes air through the entire bean mass, which Roest says increases the energy efficiency of roasting larger batches while allowing a faster roast and lower temperatures.
Heating elements at each end of the P2000 roast chamber are monitored by a dedicated temperature sensor that corresponds with a bean temperature (BT) sensor and environmental temperature (ET) sensor. The automated system is designed to maintain and adjust temperatures precisely and evenly throughout.
The machine will also have the sample roasters’ first crack detection feature as well as a color tracking feature, a chaff compression system, a case design favoring ease of maintenance and more features, according to the company.
“Our final prototype is currently in production,” Roest CTO, Co-Founder and Product Developer Sverre Simonsen told Daily Coffee News. “We are aiming to have a small number of roasters ready for assembly and testing after summer, and these will go to our first ‘pilot’ customers… Unfortunately, the new prototype will not be ready for the SCA Expo in Boston but we are confident to bring to the U.S. the final model next year, which will be ready for purchase.”
Simonsen said the estimated price for a P2000 will start at $16,000 USD. The Roest L100 is available now in configurations ranging from $7,200 to $7,850 (excluding VAT).
