The New Acaia Umbra Lunar Goes Where Other Scales Cannot

Coffee-focused scale maker Acaia recently launched the Umbra Lunar, a scale with no display screen. The device is designed to pair with other Acaia scales for display, while fitting where larger scales cannot.

The thin device is 4.1 inches long and wide, rises only 0.6 inches high, and has a maximum capacity of 1,000 grams (35 ounces). Acaia revealed the Umbra Lunar at the 2025 SCA Expo in Houston in April. (Read all of DCN’s 2025 Expo coverage.)

The subtle, matte-finished device can also pair with Acaia apps for using phones and other devices as displays.

The company said the more durable and energy-efficient design offers longer battery life than other scales, while providing owners of Acaia Pearl scales a cost-effective option for something to fit more conveniently on espresso machine drip trays where clearance under the group may be limited.

“This is a great way to expand without the higher price point,” Acaia Digital Marketing Manager Susan Kealy told Daily Coffee News. “You’re not sacrificing accuracy or linearity. You’re going to get that same precision that we strive for. It’s also great if you are a traveling barista; you can brew on the go with a much more water-resistant scale.”

Acaia is also presenting the Umbra Lunar as an additional scale layer in pourover brewing scenarios, in order to weigh and record both water in and brew out, or for uses beyond coffee.

“You could start using it elsewhere in the kitchen, like if you’re into baking and such,” said Kealy. “There’s no display you have to be worrying about scuffing up.”

Following a 2013 Kickstarter campaign, Acaia officially launched its flagship Pearl scale in 2014, while establishing a U.S. headquarters in California. After rolling out numerous other scales, bean dosers and a grinder, the company has in recent years introduced multiple devices designed to enhance and extend the lives of its existing products.

In 2023, in conjunction with the premiere of the Orion Nano doser, the company rolled out Orion’s Belt, a wireless connectivity system that links as many as nine Orions to collectively become an on-demand coffee blending station.

Last year the company launched the Acaia Astra, a data logger with color display that functions as a remote flow meter and predictive timing device that integrates with existing Acaia scales.

Selling for $135, the new Umbra Lunar scale is currently compatible with Pearl, Pearl S and Lunar scales. Compatibility with additional devices is forthcoming, according to the company.

Acaia is also planning to introduce the Umbra Lunar Duo, which is exactly twice as long as the Umbra Lunar, for weighing portafilters, coffee cupping sample trays and other longer objects, with a higher capacity of 1,500 grams.
