German commercial coffee grinder maker Mahlkönig recently unveiled its second machine designed for home use, the Mahlkönig X64 SD.
Quietly introduced at recent Mahlkönig branded events and then launched publicly at the World of Coffee Jakarta trade show in May, the X64 SD is a compact single-dose “all-purpose” grinder with settings ranging from espresso through cold brew.
It follows the X54 Allround grinder, which rolled out five years ago as the brand’s sole machine designed for home use, although Mahlkönig home sales lead Frederik Bertges said it may find other uses.
“Similar to the X54, we are likely going to see [the X64 SD] in cafes and restaurants as a secondary grinder for smaller volumes, such as decaf, specialty or filter grinds,” Bertges told DCN.
Whereas the cylindrical body of the X54 echoes the design of the company’s professional E series machines, the X64 SD takes a new shape, highlighting the retention-reducing angled orientation of the 64-millimeter flat burrs at its core.
While the adjustment dial is numbered one to 12, a full rotation of the knob is required for the pointer to move from one increment to the next, amounting to a wide, high-resolution stepless adjustment range.
In the neck at the top of its aluminum case, without a hopper, the X64 SD holds 34 grams of whole bean coffee. The included hopper can hold an additional 105 grams.
Custom Mahlkönig burrs spun at 1,950 RPM output grounds as quickly as 3 grams per second. An included bellows assists in clearing the last of the grounds out into the X64SD’s 58-millimeter dosing cup receptacle, which is optionally topped with an anti-static funnel.
Pricing for the X64 SD in the United States is slated to land at $599 for machines that are arriving now to warehouses in Hamburg, Germany, and Seattle, Washington. Shipping is expected to commence simultaneously in the U.S., EU and Asia next month.
As a busy summer progresses, Mahlkönig will be expanding upon its Grind-By-Sync system with the Sync Scale, an interactive scale designed for weighing extractions on a wider range of commercial espresso machines in order to link them to Grind-By-Sync grinders.
That scale will also be able to communicate with the Mahlkönig E64 WS, a Grind-By-Sync grinder for the home market, launching this fall. The first Mahlkönig
Home Espresso Machine is slated to debut during the same period. The company has also been active promoting its new flagship commercial models under the EK Omnia name.
Meanwhile, the company is moving quickly to ramp up production of the X64 SD in response to early and higher-than-anticipated demand, according to Bertges.
“As the U.S. is a very important market for Mahlkönig, we are giving it priority regarding the volume provided,” he said. “However, based on current back orders, capacity will remain an issue this year. At the same time, we are trying to distribute the monthly volumes evenly to our partners to ensure that everyone can experience the grinder this year.”
