German coffee grinder company Mahlkönig took its first step into espresso brewing last week with the launch of the Mahlkönig Xenia home espresso machine.
Following Mahlkönig parent company Hemro Group‘s acquisition of the Berlin-based Xenia Espresso company earlier this year, Mahlkönig announced a re-launched flagship Xenia espresso machine under the Mahlkönig brand.
Hemro Group has also announced the launch of the new E64 WS grinder, which communicates directly with the Xenia via Mahlkönig’s Grind-by-Sync platform.
Both products were highlighted at an off-site event in conjunction with the HostMilano expo in Milan, Italy. (Read all of DCN’s HostMilano 2025 coverage.)
Mahlkönig Xenia
The dual-boiler Mahlkönig Xenia houses four heaters: one inside the coffee boiler, one in the steam boiler and two embedded within the brew group to maintain stable brewing temperatures and make quick changes. Pre-heated fresh water enters the 270-milliliter brew boiler at its bottom to minimize thermal impact on water exiting toward the top, while the three-kilogram metal group is designed to further offset and stabilize brewing temperature.
Additional sensors and controls inside the Xenia allow users to create extraction profiles based on pressure, flow and temperature parameters, as well as finished beverage weight data from an integrated drip-tray scale.
A powerful steam system aims for 50 percent higher pressure than average home machines according to Mahlkönig, and the machine ships with Grind-by-Sync technology built in, ready to communicate with compatible Mahlkönig grinders that will automatically adjust themselves for consistent results.
“The goal of Xenia has always been to rethink espresso technology from the ground up,” Holger Dreissig, founder of Xenia Espresso, said in an announcement of the re-launched machine. “With Mahlkönig’s innovation and engineering behind it, the new Xenia delivers unprecedented control, consistency and simplicity for the home barista.”
Founded in 2012 by members of an online coffee enthusiasts’ group in Germany, Xenia Espresso offers features such as interactivity with smart scales and a web-based platform for visualizing pressure and extraction data. Its dual-boiler machines come equipped with quiet pumps, pressure sensors and PID controls over advanced heating systems, and optional direct plumbing fittings or onboard reservoirs.
Financial terms of Hemro Group’s acquisition of Xenia were not disclosed. The new Mahlkönig Xenia machines are manufactured in Hamburg. Pricing has not yet been finalized for Xenia machines, which are slated to begin shipping to the U.S. in 2026.
The Mahlkönig E64 WS Grinder
Joining the Xenia on the launchpad is the Mahlkönig E64 WS, the first home grinder by the brand to feature Grind-by-Sync.
A built-in scale also enables grind-by-weight capabilities. Manual adjustments are made through an electronic interface, and the burrs match those in the recently launched Mahlkönig X64 SD home grinder.
Based on weight and timing of extractions recorded by the Xenia and shared via the Sync System, the E64 WS automatically adjusts coarser or finer depending on programmed target results.
“We’re shaping a future where grinder precision, espresso machine stability, and intelligent extraction control work seamlessly together in perfect harmony,” Hemro Group CEO Marcel Lehmann said this week. “By bringing Holger and the Xenia platform into the Mahlkönig family, we’ve created a product ecosystem that delivers professional-level performance to coffee lovers at home like never before.”
Pricing on the E64 WS grinder is also not yet announced, though shipping is slated to begin before the end of 2025.
