Kailua-Kona, Hawaii-based coffee roaster and retailer Daylight Mind Coffee Company is launching a coffee school, including multi-day educational sessions led by founder and coffee scientist Dr. Shawn Steiman.

The first course, “Coffee: A crash course,” will run from February 24-26. The 10-class course will include topics such as brewing, the Hawaiian coffee industry and the relationship of coffee to human health. Steiman says the school — designed for both consumers and coffee professionals — is the first of its kind presented by a U.S. roastery because it is located in a coffee growing region, allowing for a deeper immediate connection for seed-to-cup principals.

Steiman says he will lead the first course, but plans to bring in other Daylight Mind employees as well as guest instructors from around the world for future sessions. “The Daylight Mind coffee school aspires to redefine what a coffee school should be and aims to teach students from around the world more than they ever thought they wanted to know,” he says.

Steiman and his partners opened Daylight Mind late last year, complete with a coffee roasting operation, a retail bar, a full-service restaurant and a bakery. The coffee company immediately made waves when it was included on Fodor’s Travel’s list of America’s Best 15 Independent Coffee Shops.
