Elements of Suspense Inside Coffee Commissary’s New Culver City Shop

Coffee Commissary, the Los Angeles-based retail brand headed by Tyler King, has opened its fourth shop, at 3425 Motor Ave., in the Palms neighborhood of Culver City.

One thing about Coffee Commissary: The shops always look great. Another thing: No two are the same. For comparison, check out Commissary’s third location, in Burbank, where signature yellows pop out from cement and steel, all above a somewhat dizzying zigzag floor pattern.

For the newest shop, King and his team designed the welded installations that help give form and function to the space. Floor-to-ceiling retail shelving includes laptop workspace underneath. Numerous suspended elements, including a square tiled ceiling over the bar, help define the interior, where Commissary-designed barstools face sliding glass doors leading to the patio.

Following the multiroaster approach established at Commissary’s other three bars — Burbank, Hollywood and West Hollywood — the Culver City location includes coffees from Victrola Coffee Roasters (Seattle), Coava Coffee Roasters (Portland), Temple Coffee Roasters (Sacramento), Madcap Coffee Roasters (Grand Rapids) and Supersonic Coffee (Berkeley).

On the bar is Commissary’s original and refurbished, hand-matted La Marzocco Strada 3-group espresso machine, as well as manual pourover gear.
