The nonprofit Cup and Excellence (COE) and the Salvadoran Coffee Council (CSC) have announced 24 winners of the 2021 El Salvador Cup of Excellence competition, including a longtime coffee farmer who refined operations to reach soaring new quality heights.
The top-scoring coffee — a semi-washed Pacamara variety scoring 91.68 — was submitted by producer Ever Leonel Díaz Pérez of the Mileydi farm in the Alotepec-Metapán region.
Díaz’s Pacamara was one of 141 samples from six main growing regions in the country submitted to the competition, and it was the fourth time Díaz has participated in the event, where he earned a fourth-place finish in 2018 and a third-place finish in 2020.

“This is a great achievement that has had a long process,” Díaz said in an announcement from the event’s organizers. “This is not from one year to the next. I have been planting coffee for 17 years, and finally began to perfect it in 2016.”
Two other coffees scored 90+ in the prestigious competition, including a natural Gesha (91.29) submitted by Giancarlo Rusconi of the farm El Conocaste, also in the Alotepec-Metapán region. In third place was another washed Gesha (90.54) from the Santa Elena farm, a member of the Zapotal Cooperative in the Apaneca–Ilamatepec region.

All the 87+ scoring winners will be heading to the COE El Salvador auction, taking place online on Tuesday, Aug. 10. An auction of “National Winners,” comprising coffees that scored between 85-86.99 in the international judging round, will take place Aug. 2-13.
