Royal Coffee Publishes Booklet on Fermentation and Flavor

Bay Area green coffee trading company Royal Coffee has published a free booklet called “The Coffee Fermentation Flavor Continuum.” Authored by Royal’s Chris Kornman, the guide provides an informative overview of fermentation in post-harvest coffee processing. Fermentation remains a rapidly evolving intervention in the coffee industry, playing a key role in taste-making, quality differentiation and even market dynamics.

National Coffee Association to Award Food 4 Farmers, John Boyle and Kathryn Lawson

Ahead of its upcoming annual convention in Nashville, the National Coffee Association of the United States has announced the winners of its annual awards. Vermont-based nonprofit Food 4 Farmers has been named the NCA’s “Origin Charity of the Year” for its ongoing programs addressing food insecurity in coffee communities. Past NCA and former Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA President and CEO John Boyle is being presented with the NCA’s distinguished leadership award. Nestlé USA Director for Regulatory and Scientific Affairs Kathryn Lawson is receiving the group’s volunteer of the year award.

Löfbergs Partners with Scanlog for Greener Sea Transport

Swedish coffee roasting company Löfbergs has partnered with the logistics company Scanlog to reduce carbon emissions in sea transport through the use of biogas. The roasting company says the partnership results in “100% fossil-free sea transport.”

Report: Large Amounts of Arabica Awaiting ICE Certification

A report from Reuters this week noted a large increase in the amount of arabica coffee awaiting certification at ICE warehouses. An ICE report cited by Reuters said more than 166,000 60-kilo bags of arabica are pending grading, with more than 133,000 of those bags coming from Brazil. ICE stocks have been at historic lows since the end of last year, affecting commodities-market trading.

Probat Partners with ReiCat for Electric Catalytic Converters

Coffee roasting equipment maker Probat has partnered with German company ReiCat to integrate the latter’s ReiCatino electrically heated catalytic converters into new machines. Probat says the ReiCatino system improves air cleaning efficiency while eliminating the need for fossil fuels in the process.

Dutch Bros Donates $900,000 to Food Groups

Grants Pass, Oregon-based coffee chain Dutch Bros donated more than $900,000 to local food organizations following its annual Dutch Luv fundraising campaign, which collected $1 from the sale of certain drinks from Feb. 1-18. Dutch Bros has 850 locations in 17 U.S. states.

Miir Introduces ‘Everyday Basics’ Clothing and Headware

Customizable coffee drinkware maker Miir has introduced a new clothing and headware line focused on coffee businesses called MiiR Everyday Basics. The customizable line comes in neutral colors and unisex sizing while incorporating some certified organic and recycled materials. Miir last year introduced its first line of branded coffee-making products.

Colectivo Coffee Plans Two New Chicago Shops

Milwaukee-based Colectivo Coffee has announced the forthcoming openings of two new shops on Chicago’s north side. Planned for the Southport and Ravenswood neighborhoods, the new shops would expand the brand’s footprint to 23 locations throughout Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin.

Glasgow Coffee Festival Returning in May

The Glasgow Coffee Festival is planning a triumphant return May 11-12 at The Briggait in Glasgow, Scotland. The consumer-friendly coffee festival, founded by Lisa Lawson of Dear Green Coffee Roasters, is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Fire Team Responds to Paramount Coffee in Michigan

Firefighters in Lansing, Michigan, responded to an early morning fire this week at the production facility of wholesale and private-label coffee company Paramount Coffee Co., the Lansing State Journal reported.
