The Coffee Roasters Guild of the Specialty Coffee Association and Idaho-based roasting equipment manufacturer Diedrich Roasters have unveiled a scholarship that will cover costs for five roasters to attend the upcoming CRG Retreat in Wisconsin.

Covering registration and airport shuttle fees, a pre-retreat cupping, roasting tent access, lectures, workshops, the team challenge, social activities and meals, the scholarship equates to roughly $1,000 in value per recipient. The scholarship does not cover travel to the event or lodging.

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the CRG Retreat is scheduled to take place Aug. 25-28 at the Lake Lawn Resort along the shores of southern Wisconsin’s Delavan Lake.

“Diedrich Roasters LCC is proud to continue the tradition of supporting the CRG community by offering the Diedrich Scholarship Program again this year,” Diedrich Marketing and Communications representative Launtia Taylor said in an announcement today from the SCA. “The program is designed to offer financial assistance to members of the coffee community to help further their knowledge and take advantage of the opportunity to develop and advance their skills in roasting and other CRG community activities.”

The CRG Retreat has roots going back to the early 2000s and the early days of the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) Roasters Guild, now known simply as the Coffee Roasters Guild since the 2016 merger of the SCAA and the SCAE.

Since those early years, the annual event has grown in size and scope, although it maintains the “summer camp” vibes through limited attendance capacity, team competitions and social events.

In addition to various cuppings, workshops, classes and lectures, the event boasts the roasting tent, a marvel of on-the-fly engineering that allows attendees to check out machines from many of the world’s leading coffee roasting manufacturers.

The application deadline for the Diedrich scholarship is Friday, July 1. Details can be found here.
