San Diego’s Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has officially launched operations at its new roastery in the Morena neighborhood, with plans to build it out into a new retail space.

Bird Rock says the new Loring roaster and associated equipment inside a 3,000-square-foot warehouse will allow the company to double roasting capacity to 200,000 pounds per year. Roasting was previously confined to Bird Rock’s original Bird Rock neighborhood shop, but the company has been growing wholesale business and recently opened a 1,400-square-foot shop in the northern section of Little Italy.

The new facility also serves as Bird Rock’s wholesale distribution center, and 2015 will see programming such as weekly cuppings, educational seminars and barista training. Bird Rock says a full-on retail operation will open there within the first quarter of 2015.
